Medly Mend · Q2 2026 Update
19 May 2026
You voted. See how we're doing our part.
Earlier this year we launched Medly Mend, our commitment to funding environmental projects chosen by you, our community.
Hundreds of you voted. The results are in.
Project One — Cleaner, Safer Water in Cambodia
Providing communities with access to clean drinking water, reducing the need for boiling water with firewood, and cutting carbon emissions in the process.
Project Two — Nicaforest Reforestation in Nicaragua
Restoring degraded land through high-impact reforestation, creating biodiversity corridors and sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
Both are Gold Standard certified — the highest benchmark for climate and development projects.
What we've funded
We've purchased Gold Standard credits across both projects to cover our estimated emissions for Q2 2026. We've also retroactively covered our estimated emissions for Q3 2025 and Q4 2025, so the work we did over the past nine months is now backed by retired credits in the two programmes you chose — one focused on carbon removal through reforestation, the other on clean water and reduced firewood demand.
This goes well beyond our direct emissions. You picked the projects. We're putting the money behind them.
Reducing our footprint at the source
Offsetting isn't a substitute for using less in the first place. While the credits cover what we've already produced, we're also working to lower what we produce going forward:
- Less compute-intensive inference. We're rewriting parts of our model-routing layer to push more requests onto smaller, cheaper models without losing quality. Every request we route to a smaller model is a measurable cut in energy use per student.
- Some compute moving in-house. For a handful of platform functions where load is predictable and energy efficiency at our scale beats cloud-rented compute, we're standing up our own hardware. Greater control over the power source, the cooling, and the duty cycle than we'd have on a hyperscaler.
We'll post updates as the migration progresses, and we'll keep being transparent about what's working and what isn't. Our Environmental Commitment post has our full emissions breakdown and methodology.
Thank you for voting, and for being part of this.
