Our Story
Our story, our mission, and why two doctors left medicine to build the study tool they wished they had growing up.
Medly is an AI-powered learning platform built by two doctors who left the NHS because they believed every student deserves access to personalized education, not just those whose families can afford private tutoring. Since launching, over 300,000 students have used Medly, with 90,000 active users every month spending an average of 38 minutes a day on the platform. In our 2025 GCSE analysis, 74% of surveyed students improved their grades while using Medly, and 40.5% improved by two or more grades.
This is our story, what we stand for, and where we are going.
Our Founders
Dr Paul Jung and Dr Kavi Samra have been friends since Year 7. They went through school and medical school together, both studying medicine at UCL, and both left careers in the NHS to build Medly.
Paul grew up in Northolt as the child of first-generation immigrants. Kavi grew up on a council estate in Slough, passed the 11+ exam to attend grammar school, and went on to study medicine. Neither had access to private tutoring growing up. When they got to medical school, they realized a lot of their peers had access to this help throughout their education and they had spent years catching up.
To pay for living expenses at university, both Paul and Kavi did a lot of private tutoring themselves. They saw they were not just helping students get better grades, they were helping them genuinely enjoy their subjects. But it felt wrong that this kind of support was only available to families who could afford it. They tried a few things at university to solve this problem, but none of them worked out.
The founding moment came after the COVID-19 pandemic. Both were practicing doctors, and they saw firsthand how health outcomes correlate deeply with socioeconomic background and that education is the lever that can change that trajectory. They left medicine to build the exact study tool they wished they had when preparing for their own GCSEs and A-Levels, with the goal of making high-quality, personalized tutoring accessible to every student.

Our Mission
Medly exists to democratize education by making high-quality, personalized learning accessible to every student, regardless of their background.
We have embedded this mission into our governance structure and operations. We track and report our reach to underserved communities, ensuring we are serving those who do not ordinarily have access to personalized education. We provide free access to schools in underserved areas, removing financial barriers for the students who benefit most.
What We Believe
Educational equality is in our DNA
We measure success by our reach to students from the most deprived backgrounds. Free access for schools in deprived areas, nationwide free mocks, a bursary scheme for students who cannot afford a subscription, and Medly Mondays where one subject is completely unlocked every Monday are all part of how we put this into practice.
Made for learning, not shortcuts
Medly will not write essays for students. It guides students to answers rather than giving them directly, just like a good tutor would. It automates the mundane so students can focus on actual learning.
Teachers are partners, not competitors
We know teachers did not go into teaching to tick boxes on a curriculum checklist. They went in to inspire young minds. Medly handles the adaptive learning and rote practice, freeing teachers to focus on what they do best: connecting with students, sparking curiosity, and inspiring them to take up careers based on the subjects they love.
Privacy is non-negotiable
We follow the Age Appropriate Design Code. We do not collect name, address, or school for regular users. Data is not used for training third-party AI models. We are fully GDPR compliant and registered with the ICO.
Sustainability matters
We recognize our users are the future and therefore despite our early stage all our data centers use renewable energy and we fund Gold Standard carbon removal projects. We estimate the average Medly user produces approximately 667g CO2e per year, less than a short car journey.
What We Build
Medly is a platform designed to meet students wherever they are in their learning journey.
Medly Exams is our desktop exam preparation tool for secondary school students. It covers GCSEs, IGCSEs, A-Levels, and IB in the UK, and AP exams and the SAT in the US. It is designed for serious, focused exam practice, even for the higher-mark questions (4-8+ marks) that appear towards the end of papers and require longer-form answers. Features include a pedagogically driven AI tutor, handwriting recognition for tablet users, full-length mock exams with grade boundaries and personalized feedback, and Learn Mode, a completely new way to study that weaves lessons and practice together.
Medly Open is our curriculum-agnostic platform for university students. Students upload their own course materials including lecture slides, recordings, readings, and past papers, and Medly personalizes around that content. It works with any university course at any institution. It is trusted by students from UCL, Imperial College London, Cambridge, Queen Mary, and King's College London.
The Medly mobile app brings full feature parity with the website to your phone. Everything the website does is now in the app, including full essay and long-form questions with the same AI marking you get on desktop. Progress syncs across all your devices, so you can start a practice session on your phone and pick up exactly where you left off on your laptop or iPad.
All content across Medly Exams is quality-checked by experienced qualified teachers with 10-20+ years of teaching experience, senior examiner roles, QTS qualifications, and deep knowledge of AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, and Cambridge exam boards.
Social Impact
We do not just talk about educational equality. We build it into how we operate.
Medly Mocks are completely free mock exams. For SAT students, we run free monthly mocks giving students regular, full-length practice under real exam conditions with personalized feedback. Thousands of students have taken part, giving them a genuine feel for exam day without any cost.
Medly Mondays unlocks one subject completely for free every Monday. The subject rotates each week across English Literature, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, History, Geography, Computer Science, Economics, Business, Psychology, and English Language. No account required. No strings attached.
Medly Bursary Scheme is for students aged 14-18 in Years 10-13 who face financial barriers. Up to 50 bursary places per month, providing free access until the end of the school year. Applications are reviewed on a rolling monthly basis.
School Partnerships provide free access to schools in deprived areas. We partner with charities to extend reach further and work directly with schools and teachers to integrate Medly into classrooms.
Our Team
We are a small team that actively reads every user comment and piece of feedback, including the harsh criticism, because it is the primary way we improve the platform.
When we hire, we look for people who share our mission and understand why it matters. Every member of our team believes that education should be a great equalizer, not a divider. We prioritize people with lived experience of educational inequality, who have worked in underserved communities, or who are simply passionate about making a difference.
This mission-first approach shapes our culture. We move fast, we iterate constantly, and we stay grounded in the "why" behind everything we build.
Building for Students
From day one, we have obsessed over our end users: students. We run focus groups with students across different backgrounds, age groups, and ability levels. We watch how they interact with the platform, where they get stuck, and what makes them light up. We ask them what they want, and then we build it.
This user-first approach is why we have achieved retention rates on par with Duolingo. It is why students spend an average of 38 minutes per day on the platform, not because we force them to, but because they genuinely enjoy using it.
We built Medly to be something students want to use, not something they are told they have to. That is the difference between a tool that sits unused and a platform that actually changes outcomes.

Safeguarding
Because many of our users are young people, safeguarding is built into everything we do. Our AI-powered safety layer monitors all conversations with contextual understanding, not just keyword matching, and can detect signs of distress including suicidal ideation, self-harm, abuse, bullying, eating disorders, and exam anxiety.
When concerns are detected, Medly responds with empathy, is honest about its limitations, provides crisis helpline information, and encourages speaking to a trusted adult. It will never attempt to counsel or probe for details.
