Introduction

Medly AI is an EdTech startup created by two doctors who left the NHS to try to solve the issue of equitable access to personalised education. Paul and Kavi, who have firsthand experience with educational inequalities, are trying to level the academic playing field for students from all backgrounds. Medly leverages advanced AI technology, neuroscience, and proven teaching theories, the app provides personalised, curriculum-based education representing a next generation of AI tutoring.

The Founders

Medly AI was founded by medical doctors Paul and Kavi, both of whom come from low-income backgrounds and have firsthand experience with the educational inequalities prevalent in society.

Growing up on a council estate in Slough, Kavi was fortunate enough to pass the 11+ exam, securing a place at a grammar school—a pivotal opportunity that changed his life trajectory and led him to study medicine at University College London (UCL). Despite this achievement, he was constantly reminded of the disparities within the education system, particularly how his family couldn't afford private tuition or schooling—advantages many of his peers enjoyed. Furthermore, working as a doctor during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrated to him the health effects of being from a lower socioeconomic background.

Similarly, Paul grew up in Northolt on a council estate as the child of first-generation immigrants. With his parents lacking a support system in the UK and limited proficiency in English, Paul often had to serve as their translator, navigating complex systems and finances from a young age. This responsibility forced him to figure out many aspects of life on his own, instilling resilience but also highlighting the challenges faced by students without adequate support. Like Kavi, Paul was acutely aware of the educational advantages that were out of reach for his family, compelling him to overcome obstacles through sheer determination and hard work. Paul completed his medical degree in addition to a PhD in Neuroscience, bringing various theories he studied to Medly.

The Mission

At the heart of Medly AI is a mission to democratise education by making high-quality, personalised learning accessible to all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Since its initial launch last year, the platform has already made a significant impact by helping over 10,000 students improve their GCSE scores. Medly AI's adaptive learning approach ensures that each student receives tailored support, addressing their unique strengths and weaknesses.

Our institutional partners include UCL, Innovate UK, Microsoft and Google, all of whom have provided funding equivalent to £400,000 for our operational costs to help us grow. Alongside this we have also raised £1.2M led by our venture capital partner Eka Ventures, an impact focused fund, who share our vision for making a real change to personalised learning.
